Word of the Week: Teamwork
Volume 1 | Issue 1
Teamwork isn’t just a word—it’s the heartbeat of our softball program. Whether we’re turning a double play, cheering from the dugout, or pushing through a tough practice, every player contributes to something bigger than herself.
Why it matters on the dirt:
Softball isn’t won by nine individuals; it’s won by one unit. Teamwork is the heartbeat of success that turns a group of players into a united force. Whether it’s trusting your first baseman to dig a ball out of the dirt or knowing your catcher will block a curveball with a runner on third, trust is the foundation of every play.
Coach’s Challenge:
This week, focus on being the best player for the team, not just the best player on the team. Your challenge is to:
-
Encourage Loudly: Be the voice in the dugout that lifts a teammate up after a tough at-bat.
-
Do Your Job: Focus on your specific role on every play so the teammates next to you can focus on theirs.
Parent Corner: Fostering a Positive Culture
Your support from the sidelines is the “wind in the sails” for our team culture. Here is how you can help us build a championship environment:
-
Cheer for the Whole Lineup: Boost team unity by cheering for every player, not just your own. It reinforces that success is a collective effort.
-
Let the Coaches Coach: Avoid shouting instructions from the sidelines. Conflicting directions can confuse players and pull their focus away from the game plan.
-
The 24-Hour Rule: If you have concerns about a game, wait 24 hours before reaching out to the coaching staff. This ensures conversations are productive rather than emotional.
-
Model Respect: Our athletes take cues from your reactions to officials and opposing fans. Staying positive during tough calls teaches them emotional regulation and resilience.
-
The Best Six Words: According to the Positive Coaching Alliance, the most impactful thing you can say after a game is: “I love to watch you play”.
